"damsel in distress"

I never needed to be a damsel in distress.

I never asked for anyone to come and save me.

If I really sit and think about all my conquest.

They’re the ones that made me require safety.

I’ve had lovers turn into fighters.

I’ve had lovers turn into friends.

I’ve had every lover I’ve ever desired.

I’ve sat there and watched it all end.

I don’t need your eyes on me.

Just for me to feel safe.

I don’t need you to care so much for me.

That I start feeling out of place.

The thing is, the only thing I ever ask, is to be there if I call.

You don’t have to be waiting in the shadows, just catch me if I fall.

I don’t need all of your attention.

I don’t require you to be in my face.

Just have good intentions.

Just respect that I need space.

As I’ve gotten older I realize there’s not a lot I need.

But the problem is people still try to give so many things.

Not the things I want, not the things I ask for.

But things they think I need, things the want something back for.

Then what happens next, is we get stuck in this vicious cycle.

They think I don’t appreciate the things they give, then they get spiteful.

Moving forward I’d rather skip all that, I don’t need to be saved, I’m safe.

And if I feel that is not understood, I don’t I have space to offer grace.

That’s all I have to say.
